kicking it in 2012.

"So, last night, all 4 of us grabbed our favourite munchies and packed ourselves on the couch to watch Futurama: Bender's Game. We were all comfy cozy (Mini even fell asleep) and together as a family -- the best way to ring in the new year.

Now, it's 2009."
That was 3 years ago, but just change the 2009 to 2012 -- plus the fact that only 3 of us had our favourite munchies (thanks to my cleanse) -- and you'll have what we did last night!  Hey, if something works, why change it, right?!

And we're going to do this with our babies for as many years as we can, because, let's face it, it won't be long before Lam will be all "I'm spending New Year's with my girlfriend" and Mini will be going to big NYE gala parties with her girls in her sparkly dress and high heels.  Despite her dad's efforts to make her wear a turtle neck, jeans, and Sorels instead.

NOT sparkly high heels

So, now that I've put to bed a weird-and-somewhat-off 2011, I'm looking forward.  And, baby, I KNOW that 2012 is going to be a much better, super-awesome year.  I have BIG PLANS -- because if I don't plan, I'll get nothing done.

Okay, here's my TO-DO List...
  • Take a dance class.  Just one.  Maybe the Adult Hip-Hop or Jazz.  Or maybe the Lyrical class Karen, a fellow dance mom, suggested I join.
  • Finish painting the dining room, foyer, stairwell/hall, and back landing.  Nice crisp white, like my family room.  My house needs to stop being so beige and dreary.
  • Declutter.  As usual.  And regularly.
  • Wear makeup before leaving the house.  Minerals, mascara, eyeliner, lipstick -- done in less than 3 minutes.  So easy, and I always get a ton of compliments, so WHY IN THE WORLD have I ever hesitated?!
  • Revamp my wardrobe.  Rediscover my style.  I had one, and I loved it.  So, what happened?  Also, DON'T buy anything unless I love it and feel comfortable in it.
  • Be okay with colouring my hair.  Roomie says I'm gorgeous and should allow myself to grow old gracefully.  But the number of greys have been growing exponentially, faster than I've been comfortable with.
  • Relax. Worry less.  De-stress.  Practice hatha yoga once a week.  Bedtime by 9:30pm.  Sleep enough.  Rest when tired (this one is surprisingly difficult to do).  No laptop in bed -- just a smutty romance novel, then lights out.
  • Write more.  Develop my writing style more.  On my blog.  On other blogs.  Continue to get paid for my writing..
  • Comment on at least 8 blogs per day.  Includes replying on other blogs of those who've visited my blog.
  • Make a schedule and finish one project at a time.  And no taking on new projects until the previous/current ones are done.
  • Have dinner with my pretend boyfriend Gerard Butler, dazzle him with my beauty and wit, and despite all his begging, refuse to run away with him.  I will let this go when it is done.  And not a minute before.
 How about you?  What are your resolutions for 2012?

    santa baby: wish list 2011.

    Dear Santa,

    As you know, I already have everything I want for Christmas...

    However, since it is the season for giving, you may -- you know -- want to give me more stuff.

    I've been a very good girl this year because, unlike last time, I did not think inappropriate thoughts of Jared Padalecki.  (Please ignore the fact that I may have thought them with Chris Hemsworth.  And please don't tell my pretend boyfriend Gerard Butler.)

    I've been blogging regularly.  I've avoided dairy - except for the occasional slice of ementhal.  And haven't had a Tim's Iced Capp since July, which is, as you know, a major accomplishment in the realm of goodness.

    So, since we've now established, based on the above evidence, that you will, in fact, be coming to my house this year and filling up my stocking and any pockets of vacancy under my tree, here are some ideas in case you need 'em...

    • iPhone.  I totally look like a horse-and-buggy-driving neo-luddite rather than the tech-savvy social networking maven I truly am without a smartphone.  And I want this one.  Because it's pretty.  Like me.

    • Egypt vacation.  Roomie and I love going to places where we can not only relax, but also enjoy the area's culture and history.  What can I say?  We're hot and nerdy.
      And what better place than Egypt?!  Pyramids, mummies, and look at this beautiful beach picture!

    • slow cooker.  Okay, Roomie's going to get mad at me for this one, because he thinks that, when I make a wish list for me, it should truly be FOR ME.  Obviously, a slow cooker is not.  Unless I want to make a big pot roast and eat it all myself.  Not impossible.  Just highly unlikely.  Because I like to share.
      But seriously, feeding my family well makes me happy, so yes, this is definitely a gift FOR ME.

    • Jets shirt.  As you likely know, we have an NHL franchise back in Winnipeg.  Yay!  Go Jets Go!!!  I have the hat (which I bought when I was a 13-year-old hockey fanatic), and I had the jersey (which has vanished).  Now, I want something that I can wear on a regular day and not look like a little female hockey player who got lost on her way to MTS Centre.

    • 'Allo! 'Allo! DVDs.  I have Season 1, thanks to Miss T who gave it to me on my birthday this year.  I just need the next 8 seasons.  I just want to have a season where I can see Officer Crabtree.  He's my fave!

    • Friends DVDs.  I still need Seasons 3, 4, 5, and 7 to finish my set.  So close!  :)

    • Mother's Heirloom Ring.  So I can always (kinda) have Roomie, Lam, and Mini with me all the time.
    babyfindit.com

    • Dinner with my pretend boyfriend Gerard Butler. So I can charm him with my dazzling wit and beauty, and in the end, when he's begging me to run away with him, I'll say, "No, Gerry, I'm sorry, I won't -- I've got an even hotter dude at home. Good night."
      No, I'm never letting this one go until it actually happens.  And no, I'm not crazy.  Well, maybe a little.

    And that's it... for now.  Thanks, Santa!  You rock so much more than a pile of rocks!  xoxo

    Doings & a Not-Doing.

    Wrote an awesome post at Work It Mom.
    So, if you want to send a parcel to your family/friends in time for Christmanukahnzaa, you need to read my post for some DOs, DON'Ts, and valuable tips.  And leave a comment while you're there!

    Finished an herbal detox/cleanse on November 18.
    My naturopath encouraged me to do one to help flush out the excess estrogen I have in my system.  I didn't want to blog about it until I had something worth reporting.  And now I do: I gained 5 pounds.
    Yup, we have a winner, folks!  I'm probably the only person in the history of 'people-doing-detoxes' who put on weight instead of losing it, because I used the detox as license to eat too many of these...

    grilled ementhal cheese sandwich with way too much butter... yum
    But that was then.  THIS is now...

    Had a REAL 100% Primal Day.
    No grain and no sugar, lots of natural movement -- if you can in fact call what those weird glowing people on Just Dance 3 make us do "natural movement".  It's dance, so it's all good, I guess.
    Bonus:  I've already lost a couple of pounds since I started early this week!

    Put the finishing touches on a scarf I promised to knit a very funny friend last year.
    It was actually done, um, last year, but I decided to open the box and add some unique touches that are perfectly HIM.

    Did not grow a mo.
    That was Roomie's job.  His team will be taking a group Mo-Bro pic.  Maybe they'll let me share it here.
    Meanwhile, here he is on Day 17 to tide you over.  It had already moved from 70s pron mo to almost the awesomeness that it is today.

    He's so HAWT!

    fives.

    I missed Blissdom Canada.  This year.  Again.  Yes, I was sad.  Very.

    Then my gorgeous bloggy friend Loukia wrote a post in response to a prompt in the opening keynote speech delivered at the conference by the lovely and talented Catherine

    I thought I'd do it too as a part of my bloggy re-birth and my way of introducing myself to the many who are new to my blog and me.  Also so I can pretend that I went to feel like I somehow learned from Blissdom.

    Some of my regular/past readers probably know many of these things about me already, so if you fall into that category, (a) please bear with me, (b) thank you for sticking by me and all of my crazy all these years, and (c) I wish I could send each of you some of my favourite salmon sashimi. Because nothing says "I love you" like a piece of dead fish. Yeah, that's weird.

    Anyway...

    Five things you don't know about me:

    1.  I have a birthmark on my upper left arm.  Unless you know me in real life and have seen me wearing a short-sleeved or sleeve-less top, you wouldn't know this.  It's about the size of a 50 cent piece.  And people either think it's a bruise or a tattoo.

    2.  My left hand is stronger than my right hand.  Even though I am right-handed.

    3.  I get my hair cut once a year.  It's not because my hair grows slowly.  I probably have the fastest growing hair of anyone I know.  I grew out my chin-length bob down to my armpits in less than 2 years.  It's because Jane, my hair stylist, gives me such great cuts that my hair still looks gorgeous 9-12 months later.

    4.  I love to wear jeans because of the pockets.  I don't like slacks, skirts, or dresses because there's no place to put my wallet and keys.  I carry a purse but my wallet and keys stay as close to my person at all times.  Namely, in the pockets of my jeans.  It's a security thing.

    5.  I am an introverted extrovert.  My Myers-Briggs type is E/INFJ.  I'm seriously right on the border.  I have lots of acquaintances from many walks of life, but I have a few very close friends who I consider family.  I can organize and schmooze with the best of them, but I tire quickly in crowds and recharge the best when I'm alone.  Roomie claims I hate people.  That's not entirely true.  I like all of you.   :)

    Five things I am knowledgeable about:

    1.  Knitting/crocheting.  I've made blankets, throws, scarves, sweaters, hats, etc.  I've followed patterns and made stuff freestyle.  It gives my hands something to do in front of the tv... instead of just vegging.

    2.  Breastfeeding.  I breastfed my babies for just over 2 years each.  I've had countless plugged ducts and breast infections, and I know how to deal with them.  I'm not Canada's foremost expert, but I have first-hand knowledge, which is better than many who claim to know but have never even had breasts.

    3.  Programming.  I'm a computer nerd.  Give me some code, a decaf venti latte, and a large carpet to sprawl on, and I'll figure out what that piece of software will do before you know it.

    4.  Primal/Paleo.  It's pretty straightforward... no grains, no dairy, no sugar, no bad fat, lots of veggies, lots of fruit (but only after desired weightloss), quality protein, good functional exercise in an interval fashion, resistance training.  Now, whether I will actually do it consistently, well, that's another kettle of fish... which is, by the way, also good paleo eats.

    5.  Small talk.  That's the ENFJ coming out.  I can very easily talk to anyone anywhere.  At Starbucks. At a checkout line.  At the kids' swim class.  But of course, I also at time choose not to, which is very INFJ-y.

    Five things I know nothing about:

    1.  The Philippines.  I'm 100% Filipina, and I understand, read, and speak Tagalog.  I was even born in the Philippines.  But ask me who the president is and I'll just look at you blankly.  It's Benigno Aquino III by the way.  I had to google it.

    2.  Investing in the stock market.  Add to that the fact that I have the courage of a mouse when it comes to gambling, and you have us still living in our little leaky house in winterville instead of vacationing at a villa in the tropics with the hammock by the beach.

    3.  Sewing.  Okay, so I sewed my livingroom curtains.  But that was pure luck and a bunch of straight lines.  Mrs. Cordner, if she were no longer alive, would be rolling in her grave.

    4.  How to teach my kids to get rid of the crap they don't use or play with.  Does anyone know?  I find it easy to get rid of junk.  My kids don't have that ability, and I'm really scared I'll be seeing them on an episode of Hoarders one day.

    5.  Keeping my family organized.  We've got a calendar.  We make it to every appointment.  Permission slips are signed and submitted way in advance.  Kids are fed, clothed, and well-rested.  But just how do we do it?  I have no flippin' clue!  I always feel like we're riding a rollercoaster everyday, and if we make just one false move, we're off the track.

    Five things I believe:

    1.  Karma.  If you do good, good will come to you.  If you do evil, evil will come to you.  Balance must be maintained.

    2.  Humans were never meant to live in -30C climates.  As an island girl, I'm totally with Loukia on this.  This is why humans were by nature nomadic and migrated south when it would start to get cold.  Stupid agricultural revolution.

    3.  Canada is the best country to live in.  Granted I've never lived in Europe, but I've lived in Hawai'i, and though I loved it there, I simply couldn't wait to come back to Canada.  It's home.  Now if we could only annex some tropical island...

    4.  Stay-at-home Moms should be paid.  It's awful that some women are forced to choose between staying at home to care for their young children at a time when they are needed the most but going hungry versus going to work to put food on the table but leaving their little ones to be cared for by strangers.

    5.  With hard work and determination, you can accomplish anything.  Really.  Everything great in my life I got not by sitting on my bum but by making the effort to bring it to reality.

    Okay, now you.  What are your fives?

    the north of 49 edition of thankful-icity.

    We celebrated our Thanksgiving weekend up here in the Great White North once again.  On Sunday night, we had a small celebration, just the 4 of us, here at Casa de AM.  Here's a picture of us just before we inhaled our dinner of glazed ham, mashed potatoes, corn, strawberry-spinach salad, and pumpkin pie.

    Taken by Roomie... who apparently is a giant. Or can fly.

    And despite being given a rather rag-tag, roughed-and-tumbled, chewed-up-and-spat-out type of year, I'm still so very thankful...

    ... for my beautiful, brilliant and healthy children, who shower their parents with love, smoochy kisses, and big squishy hugs on a daily basis.

    ... for my hot nerd-boy husband Roomie, who, after all these years, still loves me and finds me attractive enough to perv me at every opportunity.

    ... that my kids spent the WHOLE Thanksgiving day playing nicely with each other and not fighting, leaving their sick mom to lie on the couch in the next room, moaning pathetically and blowing her nose.

    ... for having Thanksgiving dinner the day before Thanksgiving, so we could have leftovers on Thanksgiving day, because of the, you know, moaning and blowing -- which could refer to something entirely different, but sadly doesn't (see previous point).
    And apparently, I love the word "Thanksgiving".

    ... for my gorgeous front yard garden that, every Spring, looks like this...

    Pretty and not crappy... unlike now.
    ... for my pretend boyfriend Gerard Butler, who, I'm ashamed to admit, I'm uncomfortable watching in movies and prefer seeing in interviews and still photos.

    ... that, after a year and a half, my bathroom renos are finally FINISHED.

    ... that I can still surprise my son with evidence that his mom was cool -- at some point in ancient times...
    Lam: "Mom, who was that lady you were talking to?"

    Me: "Oh, that was my friend Mae. I used to model with her."

    Lam: "YOU WERE A MODEL?!"

    ... for all the gorgeous and brilliant online ladies I've had the honour of blogging with and who I also now proudly call my friends.

    ... for 6 years of blogging -- 4 of which have been spent blogging in my lovely Life Candy home.

    ... for my on-line friends who've become real life friends, and my real life friends who've become on-line friends.

    ... that the creators of Days of Our Lives brought back a whole bunch of my favourite classic DOOL characters, dooming me to many days of tuning in to a soap opera I haven't watched since I was a teenager -- you know, in ancient times.

    ... for the library where we can borrow DVDs of my ever-favourite show, 'Allo 'Allo!... and probably a whole bunch of other show that don't really exist to me for they are not 'Allo 'Allo!.

    ... for bacon.

    ... for my naturopath.

    ... for Heinz Doofenshmirtz.

    ... for yoga pants.

    ... for the Deluxe Sushi/Sashimi Bento at Yujiro that's only $20, Prawn & Papaya Salad at Wasabi Sabi, Pavlova at Baked Expectations, iced green tea at Starbucks, and battered pickerel from Henderson's at The Forks.

    ... for ice cream topped with fresh raspberries my husband just picked from the raspberry bush in our garden.

    Mmm... fruity goodness...

    ... for all of my gorgeous, sweet Life Candy readers.  Yeah, you guys!

    ... for so much more!

    Hope your Thanksgiving was (and will be) simply fantastic!  xoxo

    let's assume I have time to watch tv: fall 2011.

    my favourite cast ever
    Lately, I've been borrowing DVDs of my favourite tv show 'Allo 'Allo! from the library, watching them over and over, and renewing them as often as the library would let me so I can continue to watch them over and over.

    OMG, this show is HILARIOUS.  It got me through university exams, providing me with some much needed comic relief without fail.

    If you've never seen it yet, you should go to Youtube and watch some clips.  Go! Right now!  I'll wait for you.  Go on.

    Back?  Okay.  Now, I've been watching 'Allo 'Allo! almost exclusively.  Almost.  Because as much as I love that show, and despite the conclusion of long running shows I've enjoyed (Smallville) and the cancellation of promising shows that were never given a chance (Stargate: Universe), there are still a handful of tv shows I look forward to watching every fall.

    Here's the list of what I'm watching -- and not watching -- this season...

    Shows I just can't miss:
    Doctor Who - The season finale is tomorrow, so I'm sad, but it'll be time for the Christmas Special soon, so yay!  I think Matt Smith is my favourite Doctor.  The whole River Song story line is simply fascinating!
    Torchwood - Not sure how they're going to top Miracle Day.  Also not sure when this will be on again.  By the way, am I the only one who thought The Blessing apertures looked like gigantic vulvas?  Ya?  Oh.  Okay, never mind.
    Fringe - This show is seriously messed up.  Which is why I love it so.  And OMG Peter!
    Eureka - I even loved it after Hottie McHotster Ed Quinn left the show.  Although Colin Ferguson made it really easy to tune in.  Creative and cool.  Final season.  Sad. At least I'll still have...
    Warehouse 13 - The spin-off of Eureka.  Similar in their 'out there'-ness, so I hope it'll be enough to make me happy.  Because making me happy -- that's important.
    Sanctuary - Abnormals.  Yeah, if you look up at this list, you'll see what I love.  Abnormals.  Plus, I adore Christopher Heyerdahl.  ADORE.  Have you heard his voice?!  It's like being wrapped up in luscious dark chocolate.  Ahem.  Anyway, abnormals.

    Shows I thankfully enjoy because it's always on when my kids have the tv on:
    Phineas & Ferb, Wizards of Waverly Place, Good Luck Charlie, iCarly

    Shows that I just can't or won't get into for fear of it sucking me in and spitting out only a shell of the human I once was:
    Dancing with the Stars, Gossip Girl, 90210, Survivor, Amazing Race, American Dad, American/Canadian Idol, Desperate Housewives, Biggest Loser, The X Factor... and those are the ones I can remember...

    Shows people tell me I should watch:
    Castle, Glee, Community, Parks & Recreation, Being Human, Supernatural

    So, what are you watching?  What do you think *I* should be watching?

    channelling the spirit of coffee.

    I was sitting at home having an unusually strong craving for my fall coffee favourite -- a Starbucks decaf no-whip pumpkin spice latte.  Sadly, I couldn't leave the house to get one because my poor little Lam is sick and home from school for the 3rd day in a row.  See?...

    napping with an ice bag to cool his fever

    I had to wait 'til Roomie came home from work before I got some.  Coffee.  What else did you think I mean?!

    See?  This one's mine*...

    mmm... decaf venti pumpkin spice latte...

    Anyway, LRM's enjoyment of her morning beverage and my craving for my own java-esque drink are quite remarkable because she and I are NOT frequent drinkers of coffee.  In fact, I think we're the only 2 of our village to not subsist on the stuff.

    Except for today.  And I think I know the reason why.

    It's National Coffee Day!!!

    We're caught in some weird coffee field... or they've pumped some hallucinogenic drug into the air.  Or maybe The Man put some weird subliminal YOU WANT COFFEE TOMORROW message in a commercial on Global TV yesterday or something.

    That's the only explanation I can think of.  Get your own cup of java and enjoy the day.  I don't think we have any choice but to do it.

    * - This is already empty.  It was good.  Yum.

    getting to know me.

    It's been so long since I've done one of these!  And if you look back through my archives, you'll see just how much I love them!!!

    I found this one on Theta Mom® where the always-awesome Heather thought she'd give her many new readers a bit of a refresher on her.  I figure I should steal this do the same here... you know, as part of my fresh new start.  :)  Thanks, Heather!

    a) If you feel I haven't yet overshared enough, please feel free to ask any question in the comments.
    b) If you want to do this too, I'd love it if you would come back and share your link in the comments.

    Okay, here we go...

    1. Name someone with the same birthday as you. Bryan Adams

    2. What has been your favorite age so far? 30...  It all started when Roomie threw me an awesome surprise birthday party.  Then, Roomie and I turned down a relocation by Nortel and subsequently got 2 severance packages that enabled us to take a year off, get married, and go on 2 honeymoons -- one to Cancun and the other to Drumheller.

    3. Where did you meet your husband? in university.  it may have during calculus class, but neither of us are sure.  we may have both been drunk at the time.

    4. How many children do you have? 2 and they are the most adorable children in the world.  truth.

    5. Have you ever sung in front of a large number of people? yes, in church, when I was still a good Catholic girl and played the organ and sang in the choir.  my parents forced me to. it was a nightmare.

    6. What’s the first thing you notice about your preferred sex? height.  I love tall men.

    7. What really turns you off?  the lack of consideration of others.

    8. What do you order at Starbucks? during fall/winter: decaf pumpkin spice latte... during spring/summer: iced half-sweet shaken green tea.

    9. What is your biggest mistake? not moving out of my parents house sooner.

    10. As a child, what did you want to grow up to be? I wanted to be a nurse, then grew up to realize that I hate the sight of blood. nurses apparently have to deal with that sort of thing. hm.

    11. Say something totally random about yourself. my thumbs are different.  from each other.

    12. Do you still watch kiddie movies or TV shows? definitely, Phineas & Ferb is one of my favourite shows... and I will watch Max & Ruby when I'm sad and missing my kids' toddler years. I'm a sentimental fool sometimes.

    13. Did you have braces? yes... from grade 9 to the beginning of grade 12.  with my big glasses and perm, I looked like your basic 80s nightmare.

    14. Favorite Social Network? Facebook... for now...  until they do something to piss me off.  again.

    15. What is the most romantic thing someone of the preferred sex has done for you?  Roomie stood on a chair in the middle of a crowded lecture hall and declared that I was the most beautiful woman in the world.  thing is, I don't think his intention was in any way romantic.  and I don't think he knew he would end up married to his "most beautiful woman in the world".

    16. When do you know it’s love?  when you can't imagine life without the other person. or the other person's rich. kidding.

    17. Do you speak any other languages? my first language was Tagalog/Filipino.

    18. Have you ever been to a tanning salon? do I look like I need to tan?!

    19. What magazines do you read? I read the occasional MoneySense, InStyle, and Style at Home... and when I say occasional, I mean, once every 6-10 months.

    20. What is playing on your iPod right now? Rihanna's Only Girl (In The World)

    21. Have you ever ridden in a limo? yes, on the way back home from the airport upon our return from our Cancun honeymoon. it wasn't as awesome as I thought it would be.

    22. Has anyone you were really close to passed away? yes, my paternal grandfather.  I was his first ever grandchild, and he helped raised me when my parents and I still lived in the Philippines.  we were thick as thieves, and he approved of, when I, at the age of 2, beat up kids much older than me.

    23. Do you watch MTV? nope, but I do watch MuchMoreMusic. #iamcanadian

    24. What’s something that really annoys you? when my kids just drop stuff (toys, crayons, stuffies, pokemon cards, lego...) on the floor when they're done with it.  and then when I bring it to their attention, they say "I'll put it away in a bit, Mama" but then don't.  UGH.

    25. Which television show were you sad to say goodbye to?  Friends... and Stargate Atlantis, SGU,...

    26. Can you dance? yes, I dance Hawaiian Hula, Filipino cultural dances, tango, cha cha, waltz, and others when persuaded by Mr. GinAndTonic.

    27. What’s your favorite place in the world? Hawai'i, as long as my husband and kids are with me.

    28. Have you ever been rushed by an ambulance into the emergency room? no.

    29. If you could meet anyone (dead or alive) who would it be? Gerard Butler, you know, so I can dazzle him with my beauty and wit, then despite all his begging, refuse to run away with him.

    30. If you could change one thing in the world for your child, what would it be?  eliminate my daughter's peanut allergy.

    beginning. again.

    To my dear Facebook friends, remember when I posted this status a week or two ago?...

    Yeah, this is the blog post I promised you last week as an explanation.  Sorry for the delay.  Love you guys xo

    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Riddle me this, darling readers who smell like cookies:
    What do stay-at-home moms do when their kids go back to school?
    If you said "have wine parties and go shopping", you would be absolutely right.  Then, after we recover from the inevitable hangovers, we power through laundry, vacuuming, meal planning, grocery shopping, floor washing, toilet scrubbing bonbons and soap operas.
    Then, when the dust (and candy wrappers) finally settle, many of us make plans.  Plans for ourselves.  Because *Back to School* is a type of New Year, a new beginning when our focus shifts from caring for our kids 24/7 to once again having time for ourselves -- complete with wine parties, celebrations, and resolutions!  Oooh yeah.
    In all seriousness, darling readers, this renewal couldn't have come at a more perfect time.
    You see, over the past year, I lost that ever-so-fragile balance all moms strive to attain.  I worked too much, taking on project after project, all the while struggling to maintain my home and care for my family.  Next thing I knew, I was doing things I hated and no longer doing the things I loved.  I became frazzled.  I ignored the warning signals of my body and spiraled deeper into emotional and physical disarray.  I started having difficulty doing the simplest things.  I was sad and anxious all the time.  And if not for my dear Roomie and darling kids, I would've stopped laughing all together.
    I tried to hide it, but inside, I was a wreck.
    So now, after a year that started with me being scraped out and ended with me being hit repeatedly with the Anxiety Stick, I'm ready for a fresh restart.  Only then can I return to basics and fulfill my goal of living a simple, burden-free, family-and-friend-focused life.
    Here's my action plan...
    1: Cut down on current commitments that have nothing to do with my family and my home.  Like choosing to step down from my awesome editor job, after I see the gorgeous inaugural issue of the magazine through to the newsstand.  Among other projects.
    2: Say 'no' to new outside-the-home projects.  Like teaching hula workshops and classes (for now), writing for new blogs, and taking on new jobs.
    3: Focus on home projects.  The bathrooms are now finished!  And now I have to:
    a) paint the side door, diningroom, foyer, and side door landing.
    b) declutter the house and garage.  and the backyard.
    c) sell what I can via ebay/amazon/garage-sale/kijiji and put the proceeds toward our mortgage.
    4: Spend more time enjoying and playing with my family.  Games with my kids and dates with Roomie.  Need I say more?
    5: Write more.  Especially on Life Candy.  Really.  3-5 times a week.
    Since I started this blog in 2007, I was consistent and dedicated, especially in 2009.  Then 2010 hit.  I didn't write much over the last year.  I couldn't.  I was too busy.  And it KILLED me.
    Now, my writing muscle has totally atrophied.  Seriously.  Do you know how long it's taken me to write this post?!  For-freakin'-ever!!!  I started it on Sunday!  Ugh!
    6: Take part in the blogging community like I did in 2008-2009.  My friend Loukia's post on Old School Blogging (on which I commented twice it was so important to me!) brought back how much I miss the days when all we had to do was tell a good story to get visitors and comments, and to make new friends.  Blog hops and giveaways were unnecessary to get comments and visits.
    So, I'm going to do what I used to do before, what my friend Ali suggest we all do now, I'm going to read blogs and comment on 10-20 of them every day.  Time to rekindle some old friendships and make new ones.
    6: Care for myself more.  Inside and out.
    a) get myself down to 118-125 pounds eating and working out primally.
    b) get to sleep at 9:30pm -- without my laptop.
    c) rest when my body tells me to during the day.
    d) continue to make daily skincare and body pampering a priority.
    e) enjoy Alone Time and coffee time with friends without guilt.
    7: Go out for dinner with my pretend boyfriend Gerard Butler, dazzle him with my beauty and wit, and despite all his begging, refuse to run away with him.  It's going to happen, you know.
    Thanks to all my family and friends -- especially Roomie, Lam, and Mini -- who've been such a great support through this past year and have been great cheerleaders, so excited for me as I started this new phase in my life.  Again, I love you guys!
    Getting Into Trouble? Maybe.
    I've been...
    • loving poached free-run eggs and organic strawberries for breakfast.
    • working -- to be honest, much more than I should be to maintain optimal health.
    • going to sleep with my laptop instead of my usual smutty romance novel.
    • shopping madly all over town for pieces for my soon-to-be spa bathroom.
    • indulging in bacon.
    • planning a birthday party for a 9yo boy who loves to race.
    • planning a birthday party for a 7yo girl who loves to bounce.
    • slathering on the coconut oil.
    • weeding and beautifying my kids' beloved school.
    • calling other parents to help keep our kids' school looking gorgeously green all summer long.
    • cruising to family summer destinations in our TARDIS.
    • taking my son to his daily speech therapy sessions with his very pretty therapist.
    • singing out loud to awesome songs on the car radio.
    • journeying through the world of Harry Potter from start to finish.
    • loving the lush green foliage and vibrant blooms in my garden.
    • watching the mouldy disaster which was my bathroom vanish.  Yippee!
    • crushing on superhot superheroes.
    • still struggling with extremes of hormone-induced emotions.
    • savouring way too many Timmie's iced capps.
    • anticipating beautiful white diningroom walls.
    • not tweeting enough.
    • kickstarting a new healthy primal/paleo lifeplan.
    • spending crazy girl time with the bff.
    • staying cool in 36C/48C with the humidex.
    • dreaming of strawberry picking with my beautiful little girl.
    • planning on blogging more.  Really.  I promise.
    I did this once before in 2009 if you want to have a look.
    Let's BEE Friends
    Where I'm From.
    It's late, but I finally did it!  I found this meme forever ago at Loukia's, but it originates here.   Hope you enjoy another peek into the mind of Nenette.  May it not scare you too much.
    I am from sandos and tsinelas, from banana seat bikes, from watching the Electric Company, The Flinstones, and Sonny & Cher, and warm buttered pandesal and ensaymada with a generous sprinkling of sugar.
    I am from The Village People, Donna Summer, and Donny & Marie.   I am from Duran Duran, Madonna, and U2 back when they were considered "alternative".  I am from "Do They Know It's Christmas?", "Tears Are Not Enough", and "We Are The World".
    I am from watching Friday Night Videos, Tales from the Dark Side, and SCTV.  All in a row.
    I am from Merlin, Pop-o-Matic Trouble, and Simon.
    I am from the 2-story house on Sampaloc with a chicken coop outside under the front stairs, street vendors selling cashews, warm island tropics I will never forget.  I am from the 2-story grey house on Arlington Street with the wood-panelled basement, bedroom walls covered with pictures of boys with turned up collars from BOP and Tiger Beat.
    I am from the sampaghita in front of my grandmother's house in Pandan and the lilac bushes on my way to school.
    I am from saying Grace before meals, and thick wavy black hair, from Pilar and Illuminada and Josefina, and cousins nicknamed -- believe it or not -- Bong-Bong, Weng-Weng, Jhun-Jhun, and Jhet-Jhet.
    I am from the quick tempers, the genuine desire to help our friends, and the green thumbs that make things grow.
    From "You are our first grandchild so you're extra special" and "You are the example to your younger cousins" and "You need to wear lipstick -- you look dead."
    I am from praying the rosary every Sunday and playing the organ in church choir, from 12 grapes eaten at the stroke of midnight on New Years, from Noche Buena on Christmas Morning just before going back to church.  Again.
    I am from statues of the Virgin Mary and painted portraits of Jesus all over the house that would freak me out because it was like he was watching EVERYTHING I DID.
    I'm from Manila, The Philippines, milagrosa rice and chicken adobo, and pancit that my grandmother would cook not only for special occasions but because she loved me and knew it was my favourite.
    {image: Tangled Noodle)
    From the family with the 12 girls and boys, the grandfather who would hide his cigarettes behind the bookshelf, and the other grandfather whose 2nd wife was younger than his eldest grandchild.
    I am from a large case in my parents' basement filled with 8mm films, black and white photos from the 60s, and artwork and carvings from The Philippines to help me remember where I'm from wherever I decide to go.
    Let's BEE Friends
    Summer Resolutions: Like New Year's Except Without Parkas.
    It's the first official week of summer holidays.  Woohoo!
    Behind us are the last day of school, Friday's Canada Day holiday, and my son's 9th birthday and my daughter's 7th birthday complete with dinners and presents -- and a couple of hours petting (and narrowly avoiding adopting several varieties of) animals at Petland.
    And ahead of us are 2 months of sleeping in... staying up late... hanging at the zoo... day camp... being mallrats... splashing around at the beach... and doing what we damn well feel like, whenever we damn well feel like.  Dammit.
    Okay, here are just a few things I damn well want to feel like doing...
    Kickstart my healthy eating once and for all. Starting this week, I'll be doing a 30 Day Primal Challenge cum moderate CRON.
    Watch every episode of the new season of Torchwood.  Because it's the only thing keeping me from screaming naked through the neighbourhood like the Incredible Hulk (I may even paint myself green) due to Doctor Who withdrawal.
    Drink Sangria on a patio with Roomie and friends. I haven't done this in years!
    Finish reading Andrew Davidson's Gargoyle, then pass it on to a friend.  I scored a copy of this book from my friend Alex.  She and her husband are both friends of the author who recently launched 500 Gargoyles, a FB page that tracks the movement of 500 copies of the book from reader to reader across the globe.
    Watch as many summer movies as I can.  Alone and with my family.  Without popcorn or cotton candy.
    Get professional pedicures with Mini.
    Paint the diningroom.  Pretty white.
    Have a garage sale.
    Rearrange the master bedroom furniture.  The conversation went like this...
    Me: "Honey, why have we never put the bed against this wall?"
    Roomie: "You know, I don't know."
    Me: "Maybe we should."
    Roomie: "Okay."
    Wear more dresses.  Like this new favourite of mine from Old Navy.  My bff has been dragging me out shopping lately, much to Roomie's joy -- he wants to see me in sundresses this summer.
    Go to our regular family summer haunts. Lower Fort Garry, Tinkertown, Skinners at Lockport, etc.
    What are your plans for the summer?
    What are Your Must-See Movies of Summer 2011?
    Know the movie with this hot dude?
    Yeah, I didn't see that movie last night.  Roomie and the kids did.  Sad.
    Okay, not sad.  In fact, I'm even a little glad.  Glad to have missed Ryan Reynolds' hottie hot self on the big screen?!  Nenette, are you mad, drunk, or possibly high?!
    Oh, don't get me wrong -- I'd love to see Green Lantern.  Actually, I'd happily take Ryan Reynolds and slather him all over with coconut oil and maybe nutella.  (Hmmm, that sounded less weird in my head.)
    But tonight, my even-hotter husband decided to give me a wonderful gift by taking the kids and leaving for 2.351 hours.  He gave me a chance to enjoy some solitary naked cartwheel time peace and quiet at home before the kids go on summer break and harass me constantly drive me to the brink of insanity fight with each other incessantly shower me with their love, energetic behaviour, and constant attention.  For two whole months.  Yay.
    Anyway, I am very excited about watching Green Lantern someday soon.  I'd even watch it alone.  In fact, I'm so intrigued by so many of this summer's anticipated releases, I'm planning to hit the box office more.  Call it a Summer Resolution (Oh, I smell another blog post coming on!).
    So far, I've already watched Kung Fu Panda 2.  Not a bad start, eh?  Other films I'd like to see are:
    • Green Lantern - Ryan Reynolds + skin-tight body-revealing outfit.  Do I have to explain?  Really?
    • Thor - Chris Hemsworth + skin-tight body-revealing... you know where I'm going with this, right?
    • Transformers: Dark of the Moon - I'm happy to say that Shia LeBoeuf no longer makes me want to stab my eye with a Bic pen, which will make watching this movie so much easier on so many levels.  Having Josh Duhamel, Patrick Dempsey, and Tyrese Gibson in it helps too.  Yay, Transformers!
    • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II - We are the only family not in the Harry Potter loop.  We hang our collective heads in shame.  And to make amends, we will rent all of the other movies and watch them all in time to see this last flick in the theatre.
    • Captain America: The First Avenger - Yes, more men in tights.  Don't judge.  Men in tights are hot.  Oh, fine, I'm just a comic book nerd.  You caught me.
    • Rise of the Planet of the Apes - I've seen all of the Planet of the Apes flicks.  From the Roddy McDowall original to the one with Marky Mark in it.  Not watching this would feel as wrong as Jake Gyllenhall humping Susan Boyle on the set of So You Think You Can Dance Canada.  Okay, try to get that image out of your head.
    • X-Men: First Class - I love origin films and seeing how these familiar characters become the villains and heros we know and love.  I think my biggest challenge will be to not expect Kevin Bacon to break into dance every time I see him on screen.  Tonight, I gotta cut it, footloose!!!
    How about you?  Which movies are on your Must-See List this summer?  Hit the "Post a Comment" link and share which flicks will have you lining up at the box office!
      don't buy it. blog it.
      I've been busy writing, decluttering, being an editor, reading, waking up my garden, planning bus trips, taking bus trips, volunteering at my kids' school, and losing 2 more pounds (yay!).
      I've also seen some things online that I like.  Pretty things.  Expensive things.  Things that, the second it comes into my home, I'd be all "ugh, I have to deal with that now too!" about.
      Since I can't un-see these things, I'll make you all see them too.  Share the love.  And the angst.  (Still, I love you, my darling readers.)  And if you too are trying to get rid of stuff, remember, you don't have to buy it... just blog it.  :)
      + Makes me want a Mac even more. (Re-Nest)
      + Mini wants to live here. (design*sponge)
      + And I want to cook here.  (design*sponge)
      + Not sure if this is good feng shui, but can you imagine doing the deed on this bad boy?!  Woo hoo!  (the architecture blog)
      + I'm the Earthy Kitchen type.  (House Beautiful)
      Bonus...
      + If I do this, Roomie's going to want to smooch with me even more than he already does.  Hell, I'd smooch me! (Instructables)
      small simple things.
      It hasn't been an easy month.  We found that our car is undrivable.  And we have appointments and lessons we now have to get to by bus.  Our bathrooms are still a disgusting mess, and I found out it will likely cost us $6000+ to fix them.  I'm now sick.  So is Lam.  The clutter is everywhere, and I'm too tired to do anything about it right now.
      Oh, and the weather sucks donkey balls.
      But then, while making dinner, I open the kitchen spice drawer and find...
      ... a handwritten lovenote from my darling husband.
      Suddenly, my world is wonderful again.
      30 songs.
      I found this challenge on Facebook and thought I'd try it out.  This list is not the original, but by Lucy 'spoon' House, and I like the categories better.
      It's like the movie challenge that I stole from Adam.  You're supposed to do one each day, posting the youtube video link on your FB status, but I'm impatient so I'm doing it all in one shot.
      You do it too.
      day 28 – A song you would sing at a karaoke night:  I will survive - Gloria Gaynor.
      day 29 – Your least favourite song: Having My Baby - Paul Anka. Oh lordy, this song makes my ears bleed.
      day 30 – Your favourite song of all time:  I don't have a favourite.  I don't want the other songs to feel bad.
      a brand new gig.
      Hey, this doesn't look like my 'rebuilding the temple' update!  No, it does not.  This week's was pre-empted by pi day festivities yesterday.  And considering that I've been sick all week and have done NOTHING to further the project, I've decided to update next week.
      So, in lieu of me moaning about how it's going to take a miracle to get me into a bikini this summer, you get some awesome news!
      I'm so proud and honoured to announce that I'm the Editor for Filipino Parent, a new supplement for the Filipino Journal, the staple publication of the Filipino community here in Winnipeg.
      The first issue hits the stands in May and will becoming out quarterly.  In a nutshell, it'll be jam packed full of information, ideas, tips, local news, and announcements for new parents, new-to-Canada parents, and parents who hope to reintroduce their kids to their ancestral culture here in Winnipeg.
      We are all so very excited about this new project.  And I hope you're all excited for me too.  Yes, you should be.  Because this is awesome!  And I'm so thrilled to be a part of it.
      So, how about you?  Any news?
      International Women's Day.
      Fighting the flu to pay tribute to the wonderful, inspiring women in my life...
      I LOVE YOU ALL!!!
      things that make me go 'hmm... I want to stab things'.
      A lot of stuff's been driving me to run screaming to the hills to eat a whole wheel of cheese to stab things to write a rude letter to frown for many minutes lately, so when my darling and gorgeous friend Loukia wrote this post, I thought "great idea! I'll do that too!"
      Then my other darling and gorgeous friend Adam did it too.
      So, this is me, being a lemming...
      + People who let their dogs pee in my yard near, you know, where my kids made their snowman!  Jeebus people!  Kids play there!  Use the damn boulevard as you dog toilet!
      + People who think using "I" instead of "me" makes them sound proper. As in:
      Skydiving was an exhilarating experience for Dave and I.
      Well, doofus, you and Dave should stay the hell away from me because I now want to neck punch both of you back to Grade 8 Grammar class, where I learned how to use "I" and "me" properly!
      Hint:  Take out the other person.  In our above example, take out "Dave and".  Now tell me, does...
      Skydiving was an exhilarating experience for I.
      ... sound proper to you?  Um, NO.
      + Drivers who don't completely change lane, so their ass is still in your lane, then s...l...o...w... d...o...w...n... so you can't drive past them.
      + People who talk loudly on their phone in public. Really, lady, the kids having their swim lesson at the other end of the pool didn't hear about your plantar warts.
      + Speaking of cell phones, people who use them -- chatting or texting -- whilst driving.
      + People who tell me "Oh, you're not fat; you don't need to lose weight!" and think they're being nice.  I'm a 41-year-old adult.  I know my body enough to know what I weight when I'm healthy and what I weight when I'm not.  You may not have a family history of hypertension/high-blood-pressure, but I do and staying less fatty than I am now is CRUCIAL!
      You want to be nice?  Be supportive.
      + Parents who don't discipline their kids... especially when their kid's being a little shit to others.
      + Being forced to repeat myself.  Especially when you asked the question.  Pay attention.
      + Couples who have joint Facebook/email/etc. accounts.  What?  Your spouse doesn't trust you?
      + People who look over my shoulder and read my laptop screen without my permission.
      + People who buy huge vehicles and act like they own the road.  And act all smug because they own the big freakin' ridiculous vehicle.  Dude, it won't make up for the tiny dick, okay?!
      + People who LOVE winter and consider you a wimp if you don't.  My husband included.  I'm totally with Loukia!  Humans arose from AFRICA.  We are meant to walk around naked.
      + People who don't read.  And are actually proud of it too.
      + Iron-clad packaging with twist-ties, tape, rigid plastic, etc.  Especially on Littlest Pet Shop toys.  Do you people really want my kid to play with your toy or not?!
      + Stores that don't open up a new checkout even when the only cashier open is serving an insanely long line, the person paying is counting out pennies, and other staff is just standing around "looking busy".
      Okay, that's it for me.  How about you?
      oh, pretty. for me.
      I'm all about the simple.  I don't usually like embellishments.  I like solid black or white shirts.  The only earrings I wear are 1/2 inch gold hoops.  Ever.  Even on special occasions.
      But when I saw these on sale for $2.50 at one of my fave book stores, I had to get them and make my netbook all sweet and stuff.  Because I'm also all about the sales.
      What do you think?  Pretty, eh?
