big steaming mess. and mixing metaphors. i think.

Remember when I said it usually looks bad before it look good.  Or something like that.  I'm paraphrasing.  Anyway.  You can usually replace "it" with "my hair", "my garden in spring", "the flan I made last night", etc.

Today, it's my house.  There are mounds of clutter everywhere on their way out of my house.  Unfortunately, I can't really tackle them with Lam and me sick... again.  Sigh.

It's times like these that I sit on the couch, box of tissues in one hand and remote control in the other, and stare at the crap and wonder when my house will ever look the minimalish paradise I plan it to be.

So, I have to remember that Rome wasn't built in a day, a journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step, and you eat an elephant one bite at a time.

It then follows that my journey to my Roman construction site with a mouth full of elephant will start with my diningroom...

See?  It's a freakin' CAVE!  How cavey?  We have to always turn on the light in the daytime to have lunch.  Not good.
The clutter is leaving, and in a move that I know would make Francine of Miss Minimalist cheer, I'm painting the walls white.  Okay, three of them white.  One will stay red.

Super, mondo excited.

Deadline:  May 31.  Sigh.  Wish me luck.

  1. Nenette - My dining room used to be that EXACT same shade of red. I got so sick of it being really dark in there that I painted it a very pale yellow. It's almost white it's so pale. And it's so bright!

Oh yeah, and I painted it at 5:30 in the morning when I was eight and a half months pregnant with my oldest son. But...I had to leave and go to work after the first coat, so I left the second coat for my husband to finish when he got home from work. He was stoked. :)

I hope you feel better soon!

  4. I was totally going to suggest painting the walls white! I think it will really brighten it up in there. Good luck! Always takes me a while to get motivated to paint...

  5. @Jenny: Thanks. :) Being sick is so frustrating! Goodness, painting at 8.5 months... I'm impressed! My nesting instinct never kicked in with either of my pregnancies, and all I wanted to do was sit around and watch tv. :)

@Brahm: Yeah, we loved the red too when we chose it. Sadly, it's just not working for us anymore. We've been decluttering for 3 years now, so it's been a long stretch of bravery... or madness. Depends on point of view! :)

    @Vinny: Thanks, darling Vin! :)

@Erin: Yeah, I love white! I painted my huge kitchen/familyroom white last summer. It used to be an ugly Vim bottle green. Check out the Befores and Afters! Thank for the luck... I'll need it. I can't tell you how long it too me to get off my butt to do the kitchen/familyroom! :)

  6. Some people (especially those with children) are just not designed to be minimalist - give in the The Dark Side! Embrase the clutter!

  7. @Rock Chef: I can't! I must rage against clutter! Seriously, this is clutter we don't use. Clutter we actually use is a different story. sigh. :)

  8. I can't wait to see the finished masterpiece. I too am minimizing my things. I just gave away over 50 pairs of shoes and 10 boxes of clothes. Who knew someone could even have that much. Remember it all comes in stages. I am only on stage 1, moving onto stage 2 this weekend. Yikes! We will be cleaning together! :)

  9. @Meg: Thanks! It's amazing how much we accumulate over the years, eh?! Yes, my biggest problem is to remember that these declutters happen in stages. Sadly, over the 3 years I've been doing this, I think I'm on stage 241... I think? :)
