Uh-huh! It's My Birthday!

Woo hoo! It's my birthday! It's my birthday!

Really, it's my birthday. I didn't get to sleep in, get breakfast in bed, or get any presents yet (I have to wait till tonight), but I did wake up to the fabulous news that our biggest trade partner and neighbour has a brand new awesome president. Congrats, guys! :)

Anyway, on to my special day...

On this day, 39 years ago, in Our Lady of Loreto Hospital in Manila, The Philippines, I came kicking and screaming out of the womb and into this defenceless, unsuspecting world.

I have no problem telling people I'm 39. Probably because I'm told I don't look 39. It's all thanks to those SE Asian genes I suppose -- or maybe the deal my folks made with the devil -- maybe both.
But as with these Asian genes, I'll look young and perky -- okay, maybe just young -- until I hit 65, at which point I'll look 80 in less than a week. I'm not kidding. Just wait.
Until then, I'm content with people thinking I'm 29 at 39. :)

So, it would appear that I have only 1 year to do all the things on my List of Things To Do Before 40.
Now, I'm happy with the stuff I've done so far -- finished a professional degree (which I don't use btw), traveled and lived in Hawai'i, met and married the love of my life, gave birth to two beautiful humans, and started this awesome blog (or should I say, super-awesome blog?).

But there's other stuff, not bucket-list stuff, but other "me" stuff -- all nice and not too expensive. :) And if you think of anything else cool I can do, please let me know!

Okay, this year before I turn 40, I would like to:

1) get my cholesterol level under control (this might already be okay -- I haven't checked yet)

2) wear a bikini at the beach

3) run a marathon

4) go to all the Folklorama pavilions

5) learn Spanish

6) visit all 10 provinces and at least one territory

7) take a yoga class

8) take singing lessons

9) have a portrait of myself painted

10) finish writing my first erotic novel... and freak out my friends who will wonder which characters are based on them! heeheehee!

Any other suggestions?

  1. Happy birthday...

List suggestions off the top of my head:
    - milk a cow
    - reunite your high school band, learn some new songs, and play for an audience
    - polar bear swim! Nah, that's just nuts
    - visit every 7-11 in town and get a Slurpee at each one.
    - get a tour of the inside of the Main St bridge. I keep meaning to ask Harmzie about that one.
    - review your will and update it if required (not to be morbid, just something that has to be done)

  2. Happy Birthday!!!

A portrait!! I *love* that idea! I'm going to steal it, but unfortunately, not before my 40th :-(

I have to say that's a pretty ambitious list. The marathon one takes a *huge* commitment. Maybe it's just in my mind, that has a really hard time getting my body out an running, despite how much I like it! Be careful with that one. Years ago I had that goal (you might recall - I think I even shared it!) and I abandoned it. Usually, I like to think that I was realistic with myself and deleted it from my goal list. But on the days when I am really soul-searching, I am concerned that I just have a lazy ass. Wait. this is about you and you don't have a lazy ass. Just be careful is all I'm getting at.

The 10 provinces is an awesome goal, but will also could a big commitment of time - for the whole family! But, one big car-trip next summer & BLAM! check mark...

I love this idea. I am now inspired to make one for before I leave my fourth decade. THAT hasn't happened yet, thanks to my uber-technical, nitpicky nature!

p.s. the bridge? not sure if it's possible. I don't think I was *supposed* to be there. It really wasn't all that cool, except for the notion of "hey! I'm INSIDE a bridge!" Yes, I'm a infrastructure nerd.

p.p.s. erotic novel? I'm officially freaked out. Most of me knows there's nothing erotic you could even *make up* about me, but the rest of me wouldn't put it past you! ;-)

    Happy Birthday!

  3. Happy birthday, city-sister.

Before age 40? Hmm. One of the most valuable things I've ever done is travel alone. Very good learning experience.

'Course, I did that before children - I imagine it's different when you have them.

  4. I love the portrait idea! I think that would be fantastic. Maybe we could buddy-up on the Spanish lessons as I will be taking Spanish beginning in January.

I hope you had a wonderful birthday and all your wishes for the upcoming year come true Nenette!

  5. Happy Birthday!!
    Love your list.

You can visit Ontario, and take a yoga class from/with me.
    That's 1 and 1/11th off the to-do list.

  6. Happy Birthday!! That's a mighty impressive list already, so I won't add anything else, as it is you'll be travelling on average once a month with your Spanish talking-books while practising yoga manoevres and writing dirty novels in motel rooms ;) At least the cholesterol and bikini will take care of themselves with all the yoga and marathon running! Hope the rest of your birthday is wonderful and you get some cool pressies :-)
