The CRONista Has Left The Building?

29 May 2008

How do I know I'm really practicing CRON?

Well, at this point, I honestly don't know. It's been bandied about once again in the CRON-blogosphere that the only two things you need to be doing to practice CRON is restricting your calories and getting all of your nutrition. Don't do one or the other, and you're not CRONing.

Now, I don't track my calories anymore. I did about 2 years ago when I first started, and I lost bad bodyfat and got healthy. But frankly, it drove me nuts. I became obsessive about every little morsel of food, and it started to become a primary focus in my life.

Okay, so I ditched tracking, relying primarily on how full I felt at meals to restrict my calories.

But am I truly calorie-reduced? And am I getting all the nutrients I need?

Truth be told, I don't know because tracking is the only way to know for sure.

Off The Wagon

And now, for the past month, I've been off the wagon, totally derailed by special occasions, family visits, and well, life really. CRON has been so slippery for me.
I've not been vigilant, and I've gained some weight. Not good for someone who is insulin resistant and has high cholesterol... not good at all.

But if you look at the big picture, I have kept some good habits. I'm still avoiding bready things, sugar, and dairy, because eating those things just makes me feel crappy.

And lately, I've been cutting down on meat. I've also been introducing more raw foods into our lives.

Reset Button to the Rescue

All in all, I need to reset again... you know, start over... and transition slowly back to healthy eating habits. I want my good habits to stick. They have to be natural. I don't want to have to think, track, obsess. It needs to be effortless.

And for that, I may have to set CRON aside. For a while? For ever? I don't know, but for now, I don't want to work under a "label"... whether that be low-carb, vegan, vegetarian, raw, ayurveda, or even CRON.

For now, it's just me, eating healthy.

I'm at the same point... Sometimes I read the CR emails lists and occassionally the levels of obsession on minutae are just so off-putting, and demoralising! Eating healthily is effortless; it's the tracking and monitoring to the nth degree that's not. Personally my rule of thumb is that if it's green and leafy I'll eat it without reservation; if it's sweet and fruity, I'll exercise a little more restraint; if it's fat-free and dairy, that's me sorted for protein; if it's bready and delicious, I should leave the room. :-) Monitoring and using CRON-O-METER for the time I did monitor and use software has given me an advantage in knowing what I might be low on and what I should be aiming for, but I don't want to tie my life to a computer any more than it is tied already through my job!

I really love the way you've done this blog, btw. And that photo of you and Roomie was divine.

All the best! S.

I'm so glad to hear from you, Sara! And thank you for the compliments on my blog and wedding picture. :)
I love your rule of thumb! I may just adopt them myself... especially the one about leaving the room :)

I also want to say that I hope you do continue to write your blog. I really enjoy reading it... for all the other stuff too, not just CR.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on tracking... it's nice to know I'm not the only one. :)

Hi Nennette
Sara is right your photo is lovely!!
I found that I was obsessing about tracking, logging, weighing, measuring UFFF!! But now I am getting used to it and it has been fun to see how close I come to getting all the nutrients in almost without trying. But I have always been health conscious and very rarely eat empty calories and junk.
I have been CRONing for about 9 or 10 months and have found great support and advice from the CRON bloggers including your blog.
Thanks for such a great blog.
Stay Healthy
