Poll: What kind of gum do you chew?

Photo: History of a Bubble Gum

As you all know, I'm not a big fan of sugar, but I LOATHE aspartame... and, kick my ass, it's everywhere! I didn't realize this until recently when my 5yo son started chewing gum.

For those of you wondering why I'm encouraging my son's gum habit, he's been cursed with my (and Roomie's) motion sickness genes, the poor little guy, and chewing gum keeps him from throwing up in my car. I'm not really concerned about him soiling the interior of my '91 Tercel. We could tell him to, as my brother-in-law would say, "throw up in your hat - your hat can go into the laundry, my car cannot", but I'd rather not have a 'puke hat' in my car, and I'd just rather him not feel sick at all. Gum has been our solution.

But try to find a sugarless gum not tainted by aspartame! It's been near impossible for us. I've even looked online. Nothing. So, we have resorted to giving him Bubblicious. They're big, so we cut them in half.
Frankly, to me, it's still not an ideal solution.

Hey... you may have one!

So, as my 52 Weeks of Community task for this week, I'm running a poll, and my question is... "What kind of gum do you chew?"

And if you have a good suggestion for a non-aspartame sugar-free gum, please let us know in the comments...

What kind of gum do you chew?
regular sugar gum
bubble gum
sugar-free gum (with aspartame)
sugar-free gum (with other artificial sweetener)
I don't care how my gum is sweetened/I don't chew gum

How about xylitol for sweetener? You can try this from Aviva:

I don't chew gum, so I can't say if it's any good. Haven't done a lot of research about xylitol either.

I'll be picking up vitamins there sometime soon... I can get a pack if you want to try it.

I stumbled across Glee Gum. I never tried it but thought maybe you might want to check it out.

My absolute favorite is the ones I get when I visit the sushi joints and get the Marukawa gum! Love the strawberry flavor (of course!)

@myrtle:
Thanks for the offer, but I'll be heading over to EatIt... They sell Glee Gum... I'm going to check that out. It's made with cane sugar, but all of the ingredients are natural, so I'm willing to give it a shot.

@cyndi:
Thanks for the Glee tip! I'll be checking it out (as I mentioned above to Myrtle)... they sell it at my favourite organic market. yay!
And I will try to get some Marukawa gum... I think I know where to find some. xo

I've never wanted to chew gum. You might want to answer the question on my Journal now up about theme park rides.

hi nenette
most of the gum that is available on amazon is sweetened with one of the sugar alcohols, such as xylotol or maltitol. unfortunately, that disturbs my stomach, so i dont consume it anymore. i haven't recently come across gum sweetened with aspartame. but i understand your concern, given the shadiness of this artificial sweetner.
cheers, arturo

Stopped chewing gum when I moved to Singapore 8+ years ago. Haven't chewed gum since - even though I now live in a country that allows them again. :-)

I love chewing gum. But if I could pick my favorite, it would be a tie between Juicy Fruit and the classic Double Bubble!

Myrtle's given up gum? Way back when, she could always be counted on to be carrying a little Trident...

Maybe you want spruce gum? It's expensive to buy (http://www.naturallist.com/gum.htm) but if you live near a park with a lot spruce trees, it's free. I recommend the town park in Gimli, when I was a kid we got a lot of gum from those trees.
It must have sugar in it, but it would be sugar from the trees, not processed sugar.

Ginger has also been touted as diminishing the effects of car sickness. I know people who have had some success with little hard ginger candies from Chinatown. I can't find them on the WWW but the ones I do find on the WWW look more sugary than the one's I'm familiar with (which do contain some sugar but probably not as much as a Slurpee).
