8 Good Habits in 2 Years

February 10 marked the 2nd Anniversary of the day I started CRON.

Yippy!!! Happy Anniversary to Me!!!

These 2 years have just flown by, and I'd be lying if I said that it's been a breeze. In fact, I'm rather ashamed to say that the past 3-5 months have been less CRON than I'd like. But I'll never throw in the towel. This "eat no crap" way of eating (moderate, obesity-avoidance CRON) is too empowering, too intelligent and too body-respecting to give up. And contrary to popular belief, it's really easy too.

The 2 most important lessons I've learned over these 2 years are...

(a) I really am the captain of this vessel, the high priestess of this temple. If things go right, I get the credit. If things go wrong, I'm to blame. Hunger doesn't have to control me; I can ignore it till the next meal. I call the shots.

(b) Experimentation and education are key. I've been my own lab mouse and confidently tried all sorts of weird-ass and not-so-weird-ass stuff on myself in hopes of finding what really works for me. And all of those "good habits" we all know we should adopt, I've actually tried. Here's what I've found...

1. 8-10 glasses of water a day does help keep me full, keep my skin clear, and keep my weight down.

2. I was low in vitamin B, and taking a supplement has resulted in a better reaction to stress and a smaller waistline.

3. I do best with a caloric intake of 1200-1500, which is perfectly normal and healthy. On a slow day, I'm good closer to the lower end, and when I have a tabata workout, I'm hovering around 1500.

4. Kitchen closes 3 hours before bed. For me, this is at about 7pm. Eating late disrupts my sleep and adds an extra pound or two the following morning.

5. Green tea is a satisfying, anti-oxidant-packed drink to have throughout the day. It's a great healthy way to deal with hunger and boost the immune system.

6. No dairy... except the occasional yogurt. I've dropped a couple of pounds, felt more clear-headed, and experience no more sinus problems since doing this. It's been like a miracle for me.

7. Eat more protein... especially in the morning. Starting off with eggs in the morning (thanks, April!) helps with hunger and gives me a kickstart to be healthy throughout the day.

8. Establish an eating schedule of 4-5 meals per day. Knowing when I'll be eating has helped me deal with hunger and kept me from overeating. I eat at 8:30, 11:30, (2pm - optional snack), 3:30pm, and 6:30pm.

Now, if I can just kick the last traces of this cold so I can get back to my workouts, I'll be gold! :)

How about you? What are your favourite healthy habits?

Off to celebrate my anniversary with a cup of green tea...

I heard green tea is good for your eyes if they're red. RIght now my left eye is red and I put black tea bags on them. IT WORKED anyway! I also drink gallons of water a week (bottled) and they might as well just put a label on me and call me mogul spring water!

Congratulations on 2 years of CRON...good for you. I am new...only 3 months or so now, but I have always been very wise nutrtitionally and follow a very healthy diet, so the transition has been easy.
Great list of good habits too. thanks for sharing.

You ask about healthy habits... mine are not as difficult as yours but they require a bigger commitment.

1. Move to a city with almost no 7-11s, so you can't have a Slurpee whenever you feel like it.

OK, maybe that's the only healthy habit I have that requires any action...

2. Stop eating the cafeteria food, bring a lunch to work, and don't make the lunch too big.

3. Every work lunch must include a banana for fruit. This is good for whatever benefits you want to claim and it's backed up by the same scientific rigour as most claims that certain foods are guaranteed to cure any specific ailment. :-)

4. Go to bed a little too late and wake up a little too early. This keeps you from getting lazy. Don't miss so much sleep you get jumpy or dopey.

5. Deleted because it's boring.

6. Live somewhere that requires you to shovel snow. A lot. My snowbanks are
way above my shoulders, and that's after I've climbed up on them to
level them out by pushing the peaks into the middle of the yard. I shoveled over a ton of snow before breakfast today!

Is that enough? :-)

@mrs.mogul:
you know, I've never heard of tea bags for the eyes... just cucumbers... great tip! I'll be trying that. :)

@gypsy girl:
yes, I do find that CRON is relatively easy for those who don't have to make a big change to their way of eating. I had to cut out a great deal of sugar (my major vice), so it was a struggle!

@g.e.:
yeah, you guys get a lot more snow than we do, eh? do you do your roof too?
since our ice damming fiasco 3 years ago, Roomie's been faithfully raking the snow off the roof. a real pain, but yeah, he gets his exercise.
I do #4 a lot... not by choice.
Wish I knew what #5 is...

"Is that enough?".. um, yes? :)

Congrats Nenette! I really need to do a bit of research to find out what CRON is exactly. I tried looking one day on the web, but didn't find anything specific. Want to enlighten me? :)

I'm going vegetarian. Not strict yet, but slowly changing over (to avoid any pitfalls, slides, and cravings), and my body is obviously happy. I've been dropping pounds like crazy. Yet, I still stuff a slab of chocolate in my mouth when I choose too. lol, oops.

LOVE G.E.'s comments. too funny!

Yay! Congrats on the move to vegetarianism! I'm glad you've found something that makes you feel good.

I'll email you a bunch of info on CRON, plus a couple of links to vegetarian CRONies.

And yeah, G.E.'s a hoot... he's a shady character I met through Roomie back in university and whom I consider a good friend... he and his family live too far away for us to see as often as we like, but through the magic of the internet, they don't seem TOO far away. :)
